Week 2

We beat Boone.  Wrestled really well.  The guys transitioned their intensity during practice to the mat.  The kids have really stepped up their intensity during practice.  Ogden tournament go canceled which was probably a good idea after the blizzard Saturday night.  We might not have made it home.

Now this is the big week.  Saydel and Perry Thursday.  Then the Tiger/Knight Tournament.  Perry and Saydel are going to be big matches for us that are have to wins in my book.  We will face some pretty tough and ranked kids.  We have been practicing hard and are starting to make gains, now it is time to show.

The Tiger/Knight is a big tournament for us.  This is the first tournament we have been to this year.  Being the returning champions is pretty cool.  But also carries a lot of pressure for us.  The key is everyone placing at or above their seeds.  We should have 4 or more in the finals.  If we do that and everyone places chances are high for us to pull it off again.  The key is to win the first match.  Win that and everything else works out.  Plus we can not look ahead to our next opponent.  We can only compete with who is in front of us when they blow the whistle.  We will be ready to fight for the title and keeping it at CHS.

Week 1!

Well week one is in the books.  We ended up 2-4 in duals.  Not the way we wanted to start the year but so it goes.  Just a few observations from the first week.  The guys really picked up their effort.  We went out there and finished strong.  The fight was better.  Some surprises have risen thus far.  Our freshmen have really stepped in and helped out with some big wins.  They are on the right page right now.  They have to work a little harder in the room, but if they can wrestle with the top guys in the room they will be able to wrestle with a lot of people in the state.  We wrestle Thursday and Saturday of this week.  So we got some days off to regroup and heal up.  We took some lumps and bruises this week.
This is the week we have to see our greatest improvement as individuals as well as a team.  I like what Jackson said about Iowa State it is not about the work.  It is about the the fact of being able to compete, to fight.  It is not about losing or winning it is about how you did either of those.  Did you win by dominating and fighting through moves and position, or did you just do enough to win.  Did you lose by surrendering or did you lose fighting and scrapping for every possible position.  That is what we are looking at with our program.  Are our guys just surrendering or are we fighting for that position.  It is early, but if that is the way we approach every match, every practice, every workout, every bite of food, every thought, every piece of homework, test, girlfriend, etc.  Then it becomes habit.  A habit is hard to break, so make sure we make that a habit.  That is the word of the week Habit.

Kuemper

Well first meet done.  We won 51-26.  I thought the guys came out and wrestled aggressive and went for the falls.  A few things we have to keep working on is bottom movement.  Of course more shape, this was what we figured do to first live match besides in the room.  I feel that our younger guys did a nice job for their first varsity match ever.  They have a lot to learn in a very little amount of time this week.  I was very pleased with the effort and aggressive nature of our wrestling.  Now for DCG and Winterset Thursday at Carroll.  Nice job guys and congrats to the basketball team as well.

And we are off!!!

Well one week down.  We have just started the glorious thanksgiving practice week.  Just to get you up to date.  We have 26 wrestlers out for the year.  Some new faces and some familiar faces are out this year.  We start our season on November 30th at Carroll High School taking on the Kuemper Knights.  Then Thursday we face DCG and Winterset at home as well.  Finishing the week off with the Jeferson Dual Tournament and Audubon JV Tournament on Saturday.
Looking at the beginning of the season we will have one open weight at 112.  Otherwise we are filled at every spot.  Some have 4 or 5 guys fighting for a varsity spot.  This is pretty good news.  Now that is barring no injuries or not making weight.  The kids have responded well for the first couple of weeks, especially the young and inexperienced.  The veterans of the sport have really helped them come along as well as pick up the intensity as well as the pace of practices.  Our 2 Seniors have done a nice job of leading this team both by words as well as actions.
The key for most of these guys is going to be CONSISTENCY.  Consistency in their weight management as well as their performance.  If we do not perform consistently we will be in for a fight every time we go out there.  We have to be able to manage our weight and not yo-yo back and forth if they can keep that under control the better they will perform.  Now I am not saying we are going to win everything but if we can consistently perform and manage the weight the better we can practice and compete.  This is the key to our success this year.
People tend to look at wrestling as an individual sport which we can argue till the sun comes up.  It is both a team and individual sport.  This team is going to have to cover for each other.  If I lose a match I know that my teammate has to either score more points than I lost or at least make it a wash.  Momentum is huge and that is how it is a team sport especially with duals as well as team points being scored.  I think this team understands that but you never know.  I guess we will find out next week.  I hope to see you all there and supporting the hard work that these guys have been putting in.

Getting Closer!!

With the fall sports season coming to an end, Wrestling season is that much closer.  I hope everyone has been as excited as I am about the upcoming season.  A few thoughts that have been running through my mind and questions people have asked me:
 1.  How are we going to be with the new classification of 3A?
I think this is a great opportunity for us. The new classification is exactly it, a classification.  Does it change anything?  I don't think so.  We wrestle in one of the top conferences in the state.  Will it be harder?  It might instead of winning twice you only have to get first or second.  This means you have to wrestle your best one weekend instead of two.  It is a great measuring tool for us and our progress as a program.
2.  What about last year?
That is exactly what it is, last year.  We can not rely on what we did last year.  Was it a good year? Yes, but was it a successful year?  Probably not, we always expect more.  That is what a competitor wants, more.  Last year means nothing.  We can always improve.  If we are satisfied with what we did we will not go any farther as a program or as athletes.
3.  Will we fill the weights?
I am not certain on that one.  I think we have some guys that can help us out in that area.  The numbers look like they are going to be up, but that is the funny thing about wrestling, it is hard.  So with that being said I am sure we will have a few open weights which means guys have to step up and make that commitment to score when we need to.  We have a lot of depth back that can help in this area, but still need younger guys to step up and fill those spots.
4.  Who is back?
Good question we won't know until we step out on the mat our first meet.  Like I said before we have depth and experience back.  But who has put in the time and who is ready to step up their abilities?  With a State runner-up, a district qualifier, 2 guys with 20 wins and 8 returning letter winners back we should be able to make some noise.

In all I am excited about the up coming season.  There are a lot of expectations for us.  We haven't been in this situation in a long time.  This is new for us and how we will react is the real question.  The way we react will be the key to our success or not.  It should be a fun and exciting year.
Go Tigers!!

School has started!!

Well school has officially started. This is good news for some and not so good for others. This is an exciting time of the year. Football, Volleyball, Cross Country and swimming are all underway. I wish them the best of luck this year and start the athletic seasons off successfully. That means our wrestling season isn't to far away. IF you haven't done what you should have done this summer it is not to late to start now. Get running and lifting this can still be beneficial to you. Also stay on top of your grades and school work. It is easy to get distracted and off course. Last year was last year. You can always improve and want to improve. If you got good grades last year get better grades this year. If you qualified for districts but not state then qualify for state as well. I wish everyone a great year. Go Tigers!

Open Gyms

So far this summer open gym has been better than it has in the past. I am not completely satisfied with the attendance, but those that have come will see the benefits. Brandon has been there everyday and doing the right thing. I have not been in touch with a lot of you since our camp, so I hope that you are enjoying the summer you have left. I also hope you have been training and getting your body in the best possible shape for the upcoming season. I do know Ty went to the Excel camp and learned a lot and was pretty successful in his matches. Austin also went to the Wartburg camp. HE said he learned a lot and really enjoyed it. Our expectations for this winter are pretty high. As of now we are 3A and will be until I find out different. This is not anything we should be worried about. The coaching staff looks at it as a challenge. We feel that we wrestle in one of the toughest conferences in the state, so we will be prepared. Life does throw you some curve balls, just sit back and smack it. If you have done the proper training and preparation you have nothing to worry about.
In other news we were not invited back to the Herb Ingres Tournament in Ida Grove. I guess finishing 7th out of 29 was not enough to get invited back. I would take that with a chip on your shoulders. We did do a lot of good things last year, but that is nothing to hang our hats on and be satisfied with. We have a lot of improving to do and a lot of people still think it was a fluke. We need to get focused and ready to go. Again I hope your summer is going well. See you in open gym.
